Separation of uncertainty and variability in quantitative microbial risk assessment models

چکیده

Quantitative risk assessment (QRA) modelling is increasingly used in food microbiology as a tool to evaluate health risks and to support the management of safe food production. Depending on the hazard and the process analysed, a QRA model may involve complex calculations: probability distributions are derived for the model parameters and the model is evaluated using specific risk analysis software. Second-order modelling, involving the separation of uncertainty and variability of model parameters, is considered of increasing importance in several fields of risk analysis. However, it is commonly neglected in microbial risk assessment studies. In this paper the relevance of second-order modelling in microbial risk assessment is illustrated by a simple example of a risk assessment of growth of B. cereus in pasteurised milk. It shows that the prediction of the outbreak size may depend on the way that uncertainty and variability are separated, and that a major outbreak may be overlooked if the distinction between uncertainty and variability is neglected.  2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Performing a Quantitative Microbial Risk Analysis Using Second Order Monte Carlo Simulation

Quantitative microbial risk analysis modelling is increasingly being used in food safety as a tool to evaluate health risks. Accurately forming such models can be very difficult due to the uncertainty in the available data. Second order Monte Carlo simulation allows for the inclusion of this uncertainty and separates it from the variability incorporated in the model. This modelling process is i...

Qualitative and quantitative risk assessment

Risk assessment and HACCP are related, but fundamentally di€erent processes. Four major elements of risk assessment are commonly described (hazard identi®cation; exposure assessment; dose-response assessment or hazard characterization; and risk characterization). Some similarities exist between the inputs for the ®rst elements of risk assessment (hazard identi®cation) and HACCP (hazard analysis...

Applicable risk assessment methods in occupational and environmental exposure to nanoparticles - a narrative review

Nanoparticles (NPs) are a heterogeneous group of materials that have various applications, and their risk assessment is an essential condition. This study aimed to review the applicable risk assessment methods in occupational and environmental exposures to NPs. A literature search for articles published since 2005 in Web of Knowledge, Scopus, PubMed, Science Direct, and Google Scholar, using ap...

Incorporating parameter uncertainty into Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA).

Modern statistical models and computational methods can now incorporate uncertainty of the parameters used in Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessments (QMRA). Many QMRAs use Monte Carlo methods, but work from fixed estimates for means, variances and other parameters. We illustrate the ease of estimating all parameters contemporaneously with the risk assessment, incorporating all the parameter un...

Quantitative microbial risk assessment exemplified by Staphylococcus aureus in unripened cheese made from raw milk.

This paper discusses some of the developments and problems in the field of quantitative microbial risk assessment, especially exposure assessment and probabilistic risk assessment models. To illustrate some of the topics, an initial risk assessment was presented, in which predictive microbiology and survey data were combined with probabilistic modelling to simulate the level of Staphylococcus a...
